With HJ Lubtronic, we have increased the flexibility of the cylinder lubrication system by means of electronics and hydraulics.


The HJ Lubtronic system is based on an electronically controlled cylinder lubricator at each cylinder.

Each cylinder lubricator is operated electronically by a local controller, which receives information  about  synchronizing the system with engine flywheel  rotation and  to use engine load information as a control parameter for the system.

This enables the user to control each individual cylinder lubricator.

We have right from the start focused on developing an electronically based cylinder lubrication system, which is just as reliable as our mechanical cylinder lubrications systems.

Optional Features

HJ Lubtronic is delivered as a complete system with the option for customers to add features based on their needs. Optional features include:

  • Automatic regulation according to sulphur in Fuel Oil

  • Individual alarm setup

  • Total flowmeter with software integration


Flexibillity, with basis in the delivery of fresh lube oil with each engine stroke, has been highly prioritized. For this purpose, the HJ Lubronic system operates with automated stepless stroke adjustment and timed lubrication. 

The fact that a stepless stroke length regulation is offered by this product is revolutionary.

The regulation can be defined according to known algorithms such as MEP and BHP, but the user can also define his own algorithms.

The various types of regulation offer the user the possibility of optimising the cylinder lubrication and obtain savings in the cylinder oil consumption.

Furthermore, the individual user has the possibility of adjusting the cylinder lubrication to his own philosophies or ideas.

Purpose of the system

It has been a natural step to further develop the cylinder lubricator and bring it into the new century by increasing the flexibility of the cylinder lubrication system by means of electronics and hydraulics.

The flexibility in an electronic control offers new possibilities for improving the operation of the cylinder lubrication.

Furthermore, the increasing quantity of marine diesel engines without mechanical drive has led to the development of HJ Lubtronic. 

The first test system was installed in September 2009 and has runned succesfully since. 

HJ Lubtronic is, like the mechanical cylinder lubricator, based on the fundamental principle to deliver fresh cylinder lube oil to the cylinder at each revolution of the engine.

Through the local control unit it is possible to control the cylinder lube oil quantity for each piston stroke, either according to known algorithms such as MEP and BHP or according to algorithms defined by the customer. This makes it possible to optimise the operation conditions and reduce the cylinder lube oil consumption, especially on engines operating in the part load area.

System description

The system includes a new developed HJ Type 155 hydraulic cylinder lubricator. One unit is installed at each cylinder.  

The cylinder lubricator is driven hydraulically and this can be done either by a separate redundant hydraulic pump - or if available  an existing pump can be utilized.

Each cylinder lubricator is controlled by its own local control unit which can be controlled centrally or locally via an userfriendly interface - hereby enable changes in feed rate, load-based regulation algorithms and the system status can be monitorized (including alarm handling - if any). 

The system enables timed lubrication, based on the fly wheel pickup sensors signals which enables the local controller to calculate the correct activation time of the solenoid valves on the hydraulic lubricator.

Furthermore, it is possible to include information on the fuel consumption, to enable cylinder lubrication proportional to the engine’s output. This is done by means of a separate pick-up box connected to the fuel regulation shaft or a digital signal directly from the engine control.

A computer is applied as central control unit, which makes it possible to survey and control the entire system at one time and continuously save operation data. The system can also be connected to the vessel’s engine survey panel, so that any error messages can be seen directly on this.


The Type 155 hydraulic lubricator can have up to 10 oil lube points.

Each lubepoint is supplies via separate dosing pistons the cylinder lube oil from the middle of the cylinder lubricator.

The dosing pistons are all connected to  a distributor plate which is connected to actuator/hydraulic pistons at the bottom of the cylinder lubricator, which are activated by the hydraulic oil by means of a magnetic valve.

The stroke length on the cylinder lubricator is steplessly controlled by a DC motor and surveyed by a potentiometer.


Redundance is build into all key functions of HJ Lubtronic system in order to meet the customers’ demands and our own standard for high reliability. The key functions automatically switch to a back-up systems in case of errors:

  • The Type 155 cylinder lubricator has two sets of hydraulic pistons each asociated to a separate solenoid valve. In case of faulty function of the solenoid valve, which is registered by an activity sensor, the system automatically switches to the back-up valve by means of a slide valve.
  • There is two sets of independant flywheel pickup signals for synchronization with controller is available in two individual.
  • Each controller has two independant CPU circuits - each fully able of controlling the lubricator and based on both sets of fly wheel pickup signals. In case of failure of the primay CPU, the back-up system automatically takes over.
  • All cylinder lube points are surveyed by safety valve, which gives an error signal in case an outlet is blocked.

The HJ Lubtronic system includes, among other things,  a hydraulically driven  Type 155 lubricator. This means that there is no wear in the lubricator, which also is known from the conventional mechanical lubricators.

HJL recommends that the system is continously controlled for leakages, and that you perform an ongoing control of the system, to ensure that it functions as expected.

Overall, the HJ Lubtronic system has no fixed maintenance intervals. However, there are components in the hydraulic system, which demands continous maintenance (like any hydraulic system). The system should only be serviced/separated by HJL authorised service engineers. 

For the hydraulic system it applies that the hydraulic station and the hydraulic accumulators are supervised and maintained, see the manual for further maintenance instructions.

For the electric system it applies that the control units are maintained according to the instruction described in the manual.

In general, it is recommended that HJL is contacted every 5 years, as a minimum, to discuss the need for service on the system.

  • What are the characteristics of HJ Lubtronic?
    • HJ Lubtronic is a new electronic cylinder lubrication system, which offers new possibilities within operation and control of cylinder lubrication. The regulation is carried out through stepless stroke length adjustment and timing on a new developed hydraulic cylinder lubricator, which does not require a mechanical drive from the engine.

  • Can HJ Lubtronic be retrofitted?
    • Yes, HJ Lubtronic can be installed in replacement of all earlier types of cylinder lubrication.
  • On which engines can HJ Lubtronic be applied?
    • HJ Lubtronic can be applied on all engines – also engines without mechanical drive.
  • How is HJ Lubtronic operated?
    • The system is mainly controlled/monitored/operated via a central computer via some software delivered by Hans Jensen Lubricators.
      The software can either be operated on a separate computer unit or on an excisting unit (suiteble for the purpose) . 
      Via the supplied software  a central operation of the system is possible - including changing of feed rate, automated lube oil  reduction algorithms and monitoring of system status.


  • Is HJ Lubtronic just as reliable as a mechanical cylinder lubricator?
    • Yes. HJ Lubtronic is developed with high focus on reliability and has been tested for many thousands of operation hours.
      Redundance on all key components/functions has been included in order to ensure a high reliability. This applies for among others the hydraulic pistons in the cylinder lubricator, circuit, power supply and sensors.
      The back-up system automatically starts up in case of signal errors or similar. There is a primary and secondary system (both fully operational and timed) - further there is a emergency function were untimed lubrication is applied. 


  • Can HJ Lubtronic be applied without HJ SIP Lubrication?
    • Basically, HJ Lubtronic has been developed for the HJ SIP Lubrication.
      Other types of cylinder lubrication can in principle be applied, but in order to obtain the full potential of HJ Lubtronic, HJ SIP Lubrication should be applied.
      The combination of HJ Lubtronic and HJ SIP Lubrication offers good possibilities for optimizing the cylinder lubrication and at the same time reducing the operation costs.
